about

I grew my beard to hide my face from the impending winter doom. I grew my face to hide my eyes from their reflection in the snow. I grew my eyes to save my cheeks from my smile's rosy glow. I grew my cheeks like red roses planted in someone's bones. I grew my bones into arms and pointed to the moon. I grew my arms into shadows dancing on the ceiling of my room. I grew my shadows into beards to brace for winter doom. I grew my beards into gardens growing between my toes.

I grew my doom into soil and I watched my garden grow. I grew my doom into rain and sun and watched my garden grow.

ATTIC SONGS was performed by Dear Astronaut, who, for the purposes of this recording, was J. Ebben with assistance from Katie Kralik. All songs recorded mostly in the very small hours of the night when everyone should have been sleeping but sometimes sleep just isn't possible. I'm pretty sure "Waterfall," "Come, come Along" and "Recurring Nightmare Blues" were recorded in the living room of the Dandelions House, sometime between Spring and Summer 2006, while the others were more likely than not recorded in the spare bedroom of the house on Bremen Street in August, though I might be wrong. Katie's angelic voice was recorded in said room in early or mid-October. Most of the songs were written just before being recorded, with the exception of "St. Croix #2" and "Mountain Song" which were written in the blue bedroom of my grandparents' house in Hudson, WI, and which brought back a lot of feelings and memories I thought I'd lost. I'm not sure why I'm writing all this, really. I'd like to thank a lot of people but I'm not going to go through the trouble of listing them all here. Most likely, they all know who they are. Or I hope so anyway. I would like to give a very special thanks to Charlie, Frank, and Katie of the wonderful band Partisan. You should listen to their records. Remember to always listen to the river, that seems to be very important.
